Facts About Humpback Whales: Salt & Friends

Price: $18.99

Salt & Friends: Humpback Whales With Names DVD This stunning footage introduces Salt and several other humpback whales by name, providing important facts about humpback whales. Salt, one of the first humpback whales to be given a name, is considered the grand dame of all North Atlantic Humpback Whales. You'll see and hear why she and others were given their names and be entertained and educated by their different personalities, their differences in feeding styles and their curiosities about and warmth toward people--including bringing their calves up to and under the whale watching boat.

Some consider Salt the world's most loved and most sighted whale. In 1975 two humpback whales were sighted for the first time in many years in Stellwagon Bank in the Gulf of Maine. One had an all white dorsal fin which is quite unusual. Capt. Avellar, who later created the Dolphin Fleet whale watching company, decided to name this whale Salt as it appeared that someone poured salt on her back. The other whale was named Pepper.

This was the beginning of identifying, naming and studying humpback whales as individuals via fluke identification. Salt has been seen each year since 1975 and is a grandmother. Salt has twelve calves and eight grandcalves. Learn more facts about humpback whales, about Salt's family tree and fourteen others with equally interesting stories.

Filmed in Stellwagon Bank, one of the major feeding grounds of this population, the whales you'll see in this DVD are part of the population of whales we swim with in Silver Bank, their mating and nursery grounds
