Humpback Whale Images: Salt, the Grand Dame of North Atlantic Humpacks

Price: $30.00
Humpback Whale Salt - Archival PrintThis vivid watercolor of a humpback whale fluke is stunningly beautiful. When I first saw artist Peggy Oki’s humpback whale images exhibited at an American Cetacean Society conference they took my breath away. And in my delight in getting to know her, it quickly became clear that Peggy is deeply connected to the souls of whales. She does not just paint beautiful pictures (though that would certainly be enough!), she has devoted her life to changing the world for whales as a dedicated activist, including founding the Origami Whales Project. Her love for whales shines brilliantly through her art.

Her subject for this particular painting is Salt, perhaps the most famous humpback whale in the world. Often referred to as the Grand Dame of North Atlantic Humpback Whales, Salt is one of the first humpback whales ever to be named. Along with another whale named Pepper, she was first sighted in Stellwagen Bank off Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1976. Since then she has mothered eleven known calves, is grandmother to five known whales and is now a great grandmother! For those of you who love humpback whale images, this archival print of Salt will make a very special addition to any collection of whale art.

The discovery that individual humpback whale flukes are as unique as human fingerprints has allowed researchers to track individual humpback whales via images of their flukes. Geographic migrations, fidelity to feeding sties, and fluctuating regional and overall populations are tracked. This ongoing data collection has not only helped us better understand these magnificent whales, it has helped save their lives. Population studies are directly related to which species are listed (or not) as Endangered Species.

The humpback whale fluke is not only a symbol of how this research helps identify and save whales, the whale tail is the very symbol of environmentalism. These majestic, gentle creatures whom we’ve senselessly slaughtered and have now come to revere, are perfectly illustrated in this watercolor. By purchasing this image you are not only hanging a beautiful piece of art on your wall, you are viewing a piece of the history of whales. Salt represents the beginning of the positive part of our human connection to whales, when we began to study and love them instead of slaughtering them.

May all whaling cease
May all whales be free, joyful and whole
May all whalers be abundantly blessed with different work that is prosperous and fulfilling
May whales and all people come together all over the world in peace ~
