This deep hued watercolor of a humpback whales captures the tender loving bond between mother and calf. Humpback whales give birth in warm, tropical waters such as in Hawaii and Silver Bank off the Dominican Republic where I take groups of people to swim with whales every winter. Seeing the babies with their mothers is a joyful, awe-inspiring experience. As we float in stillness in the water waiting for whatever encounter the whales may want, sometimes the mothers allow their very friendly and curious calves to swim directly to us. To be just a few yards from a fifteen foot baby as she or he slowly glides past you and looks into your eyes is life changing.

When I first saw artist Peggy Oki’s work exhibited at an American Cetacean Society conference it took my breath away. And in my delight in getting to know her, it quickly became clear that Peggy is deeply connected to the souls of whales. She does not just paint beautiful pictures (though that would certainly be enough), she has devoted her life to changing the world for whales as a dedicated activist, including founding the Origami Whales Project. Her love for whales shines brilliantly through her art.

These majestic, gentle creatures whom we’ve senselessly slaughtered and have now come to revere, are stunningly illustrated in Peggy’s loving watercolors.
